Executive Summary Burnout seems to be on the rise. More and more people are feeling emotionally exhausted and cynical as a result of chronic and acute work-related stress. But many people are in the same boat and don’t get burned out. By Will Stevenson on October 6, 2017 Film, Reviews. MANCHESTER'S annual horror film long weekend is back. Kicking off with a local treat, the world premiere of Habit, a socio-thriller/gory romp that is sure to leave audiences jaw-dropped. Noel Gallagher's brash, boyish, smirking wit. Peter Kay's broad, happy-go-lucky. They practice self-compassion and empathy. To manage work-related stress and prevent it from leading to burnout, practice self-compassion. Then, you will be ready to change some of your habitual ways of dealing with people so you — and they — can benefit from your empathy. Self-compassion involves seeking to truly understand yourself and what you are experiencing emotionally, physically, and intellectually at work; caring for yourself (as opposed to shutting down); and acting to do something to help yourself. You can practice self-compassion by curbing your urge to overwork (it just leads to more stress!) and not beating yourself up. An algal bloom contaminated with toxic bacteria shocked Toledo in August 2014, and forcing the city of 400,000 people to drink bottled water for three days. Three years later, scientists are taking action to stay a step ahead of the harmful blooms, monitoring the algae and bacteria from outer space, from land, and in the water, with a new arsenal of high-tech tools and research projects. Over the past decade, blue-green algal blooms, which sometimes turn toxic, have become an annual summer plague on Lake Erie. Some produce microcystin, a bacteria more poisonous than cyanide that can sicken or kill people, fish, birds, dogs and livestock. Even non-toxic blooms can suffocate fish, kill plants and deplete oxygen in the water, causing huge dead zones. Bloom size does not always correlate with its risk to public health, however. So scientists must employ a battery of testing techniques to track the toxicity in Lake Erie, said algal bloom expert Rick Stumpf, an oceanographer at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Researchers at NOAA introduced an underwater robotic laboratory this summer, which sits at the bottom of Lake Erie where it collects water, testing the levels of toxins, and transmitting the results remotely within four hours. Previously, test samples obtained by working out of a boat took a day or two to obtain results. Two more robotic labs are expected to be dropped into the lake soon. NOAA also this summer, the Copernicus Sentinel-3, that is beaming more accurate pictures of the bloom back to Earth, providing the power to detect blooms one-tenth the size of those previously detected, Stumpf said. Other researchers are testing drones on Lake Erie to see if digital images they capture can be effective in monitoring the algae blooms. Already in use on the lake are buoys that measure algae in the water. The public health risks from low-level exposure to cyanobacteria in drinking water or recreational waters are relatively unknown, however, as are the possible long-term affects of eating fish from algal bloom waters. Research is underway at the U.S. EPA and at Ohio State University, the University of Akron, Kent State University, Heidelberg University, Bowling Green University, the University of Toledo and other schools as part of the Harmful Algal Bloom Research Initiative. Include: Searching for a more environmentally friendly way to reduce microcystin in lake water and water treatment plants by testing the effects of viruses on the cyanobacteria. One virus is known to destroy its toxic effects; Finding better ways for the Ohio EPA and Division of Wildlife to measure microcystin in fish caught in Lake Erie. In 2015, six of 73 fish showed detectable levels of microcystin in muscle tissue. In 2016, microcystin was found in 14 of 65 fish. The levels detected were generally very low, leading researchers to surmise that eating Lake Erie fish during the bloom season would not pose a risk to human health; Working with 56 farmers in the western Lake Erie basin to collect data about the effects of crop selection, cover crops, wetlands restoration, fertilizer application, and other soil management practices on phosphorus runoff and water quality. The researchers also are using the models to see which of these changes are likely to lead to a 40 percent reduction in phosphorus runoff. Invasive species also have contributed to the proliferation of harmful algal blooms. Quagga and zebra mussels, which arrived in Lake Erie during the 1980s, filter micro-nutrients and plankton, allowing more sunlight for algal bloom growth and leaving less food available for young walleye and yellow perch. The mussels also concentrate phosphorus in their feces, which can be stirred up during storm events to feed the toxic algal blooms. Six friends become prey for a sadistic killer when the decide to skip. October 12 / Walter Kerr Theatre / New York, NY Notes: Opening night. We've got magic to do, just for you We've got miracle plays to play We've got parts to perform, hearts to warm Kings and things to take by storm As we go along our way — 'Magic to Do,' Pippin From the Magic Rat to 'magic in the night' to Magic Street, Bruce Springsteen is no stranger to the conjuring arts. For decades, his concerts have been described as feats nothing short of miraculous, and he has discussed his own songwriting in terms of a magical act: creating, from out of the air, something where there was nothing before. Now he does it again. Written and directed by the man himself, Springsteen on Broadway is an act of alchemy, taking familiar elements — from his songbook, his concerts (particularly his solo tours), his memoir — and combining them, with a new venue, to create something we've never seen before, something that has had preview audiences well, spellbound. Opening October 12, the performance starts simply — not with a familiar 'Good evening, New York City!' But instead with a list of essentials, stated plainly at center stage. In fact, as simple starts go, this is almost as basic as it gets: 'DNA,' says Bruce. That is just one of 'the elements that will come in handy should you come face-to-face with eighty thousand screaming fans who are waiting for you to do your magic trick. Waiting for you to pull something out of your hat, out of thin air, out of this world. I am here to provide proof of life to that ever elusive, never completely believable 'us.' That is my magic trick.' With just guitar, piano, harmonica, and a very talented magician's assistant billed as Patti Scialfa Springsteen, Bruce makes good on this implied opening promise. Chekhov would probably agree: if you talk in the first act about having a magic trick, you'd better demonstrate it by the end. And Springsteen doesn't let us down. It's hard to say exactly when it happens — it's a gradual effect, a gathering of forces, a calling-up of spirits, great greasepaint ghosts on the wind — but by the end of this at-times mesmerizing performance we've found that proof of life. Springsteen on Broadway is a true theatrical performance, with a script, an arc, and a fourth wall to break. It might have been difficult to imagine this new endeavor as anything but a stay-put solo tour, as a residency. But this is not a series of concerts — it's a one-man show (with all due respect to Patti) that Springsteen has carefully crafted, rehearsed, and honed to perform night after night. Jun 12, 2017. Mutafukaz takes place in Dark Meat City (DMC), which Run has described as “a condensed exaggeration of Los Angeles' varied strengths and weaknesses.” The story follows DMC resident Angelino, a deadbeat who starts experiencing violent headaches and monstrous hallucinations after a scooter. Jun 25, 2015. That said, Mutafukaz “is one of the most famous comics in France,” said Titan Comics, which acquired Renard's series for distribution later this year in America, Canada, and the UK. Meanwhile, Studio 4°C and Ankama's animated adaptation doesn't arrive onscreen until 2017 in France, giving us plenty of. When we published our, the most common reaction was, “Wow, that’s a lot of animated features!” One industry veteran even went so far as to question whether our list of 47 animated features constituted an “.” In truth, if you tally up all the animated features released globally in 2016, the total would be closer to a hundred films. It’s hard to know an exact number because few places are tracking this accurately. Our own list missed quality projects like Turkey’s and South Korea’s, as well as the latest entries in popular franchises like Japan’s Pokémon, Detective Conan, and Crayon Shin-Chan, and China’s Boonie Bears and Yugo & Lala. This year’s list of 60-plus animated features confirms one thing at least: lots of theatrical animated features is the new normal in animation. Technology has leveled out the playing field, making feature-scale animation production accessible to producers everywhere. This is a remarkably different situation from even the early 2000s when animated features were the privileged domain of a few well-heeled producers. So, is this some kind of a glut? Absolutely not. There are literally thousands of live-action films released around the world every year (Bollywood alone turns out on average 1,500 films annually). Most of those films are never seen in the United States; for example, in Los Angeles, around 335 films opened in theaters throughout 2016, a fraction of worldwide global film output. While animation will never be live-action production, and we’re not going to have 6,000 animated features per year, the industry is finally starting to increase production in a meaningful way. It would not be unreasonable to expect hundreds of animated films per annum sometime within the next decade. No, they won’t all be good, and that’s fine, too. Because even when there were just a dozen or two animated films being produced annually, most of them weren’t very good. But more films means more opportunities for more filmmakers, and only good can come out of that. Amidst all the regular fare in 2016, we witnessed an exceptional amount of bold and utterly unique filmmaking including Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name, Claude Barras’ My Life as a Zucchini, Ann Marie Fleming’s Window Horses, Sébastien Laudenbach’s The Girl Without Hands, and Michael Dudok de Wit’s The Red Turtle, to name but a few. That’s what happens when an industry has high output. So, enjoy our preview of 60+ animated features coming up next year. Here’s a few notes about our selections: • Some films on the list were released internationally last year— The Red Turtle, My Life as a Zucchini, Rock Dog, and Your Name among them—but they are included on the list because they are receiving U.S. Releases in 2017. (We have listed U.S. Release dates and distributors whenever possible. If a film is not being released in the U.S., we have listed the home country’s release date/distributor.) • Some films mentioned on the 2016 list are identified here again because they weren’t finished in time for release last year. One thing remains constant about animation: it takes a long time to produce films. NASA's Ionospheric Connection Explorer, or ICON, (illustrated here) launches December 2017 to explore Earth's upper atmosphere and ionosphere, a region influenced by both terrestrial weather and changes in near-Earth space. Credit: NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center Conceptual Image Lab On Dec. 8, 2017, NASA launches the Ionospheric Connection Explorer, or ICON, a low-Earth orbiting satellite that will give us new information about how Earth's atmosphere interacts with near-Earth space—a give-and-take that plays a major role in the safety of our satellites and reliability of communications signals. Specifically, ICON investigates the connections between the neutral atmosphere—which extends from here near the surface to far above us, at the edge of —and the electrically charged part of the atmosphere, called the. The particles of the ionosphere carry electrical charge that can disrupt communications signals, cause satellites in low-Earth orbit to become electrically charged, and, in extreme cases, cause power outages on the ground. Positioned on the edge of space and intermingled with the neutral atmosphere, the ionosphere's response to conditions on Earth and in space is difficult to pin down. 'The conditions in our space environment—space weather—is something we need to be able to forecast,' said Thomas Immel, principal investigator for the ICON mission from the University of California, Berkeley.' It's difficult to predict conditions in the ionosphere tomorrow based on what we measure today.' Earth's interface to space As one goes higher and higher above Earth's surface, the atmosphere gradually gets thinner. The effects of these changes can be felt just a few miles above sea level—for instance, climbers on some of the world's tallest mountains must often use oxygen tanks to breathe. But even higher, about 60 miles above Earth's surface, the atmosphere becomes so thin that planes can't fly. This is where space begins. Even beyond this boundary of space, Earth's atmosphere continues to extend upward—it just gets thinner and more tenuous the higher you go. This region is above Earth's ozone layer, so it's exposed to the full brunt of the Sun's radiation. The strong ultraviolet radiationbreaks down stable, neutral molecules, changing them from something resembling the air we breathe into more reactive forms of gas, like atomic oxygen. These reactive compounds in the neutral produce a faint, global glow, called airglow. But the sunlight doesn't stop there. It keeps breaking these atmospheric molecules apart, knocking off electrons, which leaves a sea of charged electrons and ions. This population of electrically charged particles is the ionosphere, and it exists in the same space as the extremely thin neutral upper atmosphere. This makes our interface to spacea unique region, where charged and neutral gases coexist. |
